$2.8bn Franco : Russian Investment Plan

President Nicolas Sarkozy and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have confirmed a French and Russian partnership to raise a $2.8bn investment for the development of four ski resorts close to the the city of Sochi which will be the host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The troubled Caucasus region where the skiing is located has great potential, being high altitude, but  Russia has seen a rise in tensions and violence recently with the most serious cases seeing three tourists shot dead on the road to Kabardino-Balkariya with two seriously injured, and in Kabardino-Balkariya a cable car stanchion blown up with four people luck to escape with just minor injuries after the car was brought to the ground.

The Russian Government are hoping that investment in its antiquated and limited ski lifts will improve tourism and jobs in the area, bring prosperity and greater stability to the region as a consequence. Leading the investment drive is the French state owned bank the Caisse des Depots et Consignations and Russia’s state-run North Caucasus Resorts Co. The Russian Chairman of North Caucasus Resort Co has also intimated that force majeur and security risks will be covered for investors.
